Ilhéus, my new home, is located in the southern coastal region of Bahia, Brazil, just south of Salvador, the state’s capital. The city was originally founded in 1534 as Vila de São Jorge dos Ilhéus and is known as one of the most important tourism centers of the northeast of Brazil. My colleagues and tripadvisor.com have already given me quite the list of places to visit in Ilheus, and I am very excited to get to know my new city.
The economy in Ilheus is based almost entirely on tourism as a result of its beautiful beaches and a rich cultural heritage, but it was once one of cocoa beans and is often referred to as the Cocoa Coast. My kind of city! I have heard that on the outskirts of town there is a cacao plantation…..I really think I am living in heaven.
Ilhéus is also the hometown of Jorge Amado, the best known and most popular writer in Brazil.
